So long term, Italy is one of the best teams, and indeed won the world cup in 2006, but in 2010 and 2014 they didn’t make it out of the group stagez and didn’t qualify for the WC in 2018 or 2022, and not particularly looking as though they will qualify this time.
During the same period they’ve done well in the Uefa championships.
Might just be bad luck/shit happens.
