I like the idea of augmentation but yeah its motives with these tech moguls is dubious.
Musk is weird not different weird, but verging on sociopathic attention seeking weird.
I’d assume the chips are some sort of compliance device
So the idea is a good one, aiming to provide those with spinal injuries to perform everyday tasks. The Reuters article does explain that a little bit.
Buuuuut it’s a company run by Musk, who has a long history of fucking things up and being a general fuckwit doing non-ethical things. He’s not involved in the day to day research, development or implantation of the technology, he’s involved in how to make squillions of dollars with the least amount of effort. Typical billionaire stuff, you know?
This stuff definitely has the capacity to turn into an episode of Black Mirror. I’m particularly thinking of the episode where the woman had a brain chip implanted, but couldn’t afford to pay for it so started sprouting ads. We’re not far from that future.
No
In a tv show called Continuum
People who default on debts are put into slave mode to pay off the debt.
The chip takes over body control.
