In the crypt of York Minster is this actual music instrument from the 11th century, predating the Norman Conquest.
A horn known as an oliphant, since it’s made of the tusk of an elephant. Oliphants were prestigious royal hunting horns, also used in battle, and depicted being blown by angels to herald the Apocalypse.
It would have sounded much like a mournful foghorn.
