Michael Bentine said I was a genius.
Some context.
Michael Bentine, a founding member of The Goons, was known for “always calling everyone a genius,” a charming habit that his fellow performers, Harry Secombe and Peter Sellers, often joked about.
This habit even became part of Goon Show lore:
Bentine once sent an eccentric individual named Ruxton Hayward to meet Peter Sellers, giving him a specific phrase to use as an introduction: “Michael Bentine says I’m a genius”.
Unbeknownst to Hayward, this was a secret signal for Sellers to consider incorporating the man into his act.
Ruxton Hayward, a six-foot-two, red-bearded scoutmaster, is widely believed to have inspired Peter Sellers’ iconic character, the perpetually naive and put-upon Boy Scout Bluebottle.
