Wikipedia Bans AI-Generated Content After Editors Deem It Unreliable

Wikipedia has officially imposed strict limits on the use of artificial intelligence in creating and editing articles, following years of internal debate and growing concerns over accuracy and quality.

The decision, approved in a decisive 40-to-2 vote on March 20, effectively prohibits the use of large language models (LLMs) to generate or rewrite encyclopedia content. Editors concluded that AI-generated text frequently violates Wikipedia’s core policies, particularly around verifiability, neutrality, and reliable sourcing.

Under the new guidelines, AI tools are not completely banned but are heavily restricted. Editors may use them for minor copyediting of their own writing, provided the AI does not introduce new information. Any suggested edits must be carefully reviewed by humans to ensure they remain faithful to cited sources. AI-assisted translation is also allowed, but only when editors are proficient enough in both languages to verify accuracy.

The move reflects a broader shift within the Wikipedia community, where concerns over so-called “AI slop” — low-quality, misleading, or unsourced content — have intensified. According to contributors involved in the policy, moderators were increasingly overwhelmed by issues linked to AI-generated material in recent months.

This is not the first clash between Wikipedia and AI. Earlier experiments, such as AI-generated article summaries, were rolled back after strong opposition from editors. Additionally, the Wikimedia Foundation recently sought agreements with major tech companies to offset the strain caused by AI systems training on Wikipedia’s content.

The new policy signals Wikipedia’s intent to preserve human oversight and editorial integrity, even as AI tools become more widespread across the internet.

Wonder how long that’ll last.

Good.
