That’s a surprisingly small number. Roughly 1 part in 500,000. I wouldn’t be surprised if Australia does worse than that.

I know 1 in 3 Australians are suffering food insecurity. I didn’t consider that we would be worse than America. That is a sobering thought.

My school offers free lunches for kids from disadvantaged families. At the end of last year, the charity we used told us they could no longer provide food as requests for their services has tripled. So the P&C kindly donate to make up the shortfall; disadvantaged families have also increased within the school.

Meals at school are a life changer. That is so good that the P&C is donating to make up the shortfall.

Disadvantage folks are increasing so much. It was 1 in 5 kids coming to school without dinner the night before or breakfast each day when I did a bit of teaching. If you gave $5 to a kid to buy lunch, you could get written up for it for “showing favouritism”. Now it is 1 in 3 Australians suffering from food insecurity.

I did some teaching and work for OzHarvest. We collected food from Woollies, Aldi, etc and redistributed that food in Dept of Housing, low socio-economic groups and took hot meals out for homeless folks. They would be so hungry after a weekend. It was only a weekday service. I did corporate events where the team would make 200 servings in a day and so forth.

When I was a teenager there was a breakfast club at my high school. At that time, it was a lifesaver for me. As I was living on my own and I got $23 per week and $13 was for rent.
