The Body Keeps the Score, by Bessel van der Kolk. It’s about how the body and brain change after trauma, particularly PTSD. The actual science seems a bit loose, anecdotal, with weak evidence. But at the same time, we don’t really know the full effects so maybe there’s something in his research? Anyway, there’s a whole bit about the introduction of antipsychotic drugs used for PTSD in Vietnam veterans, so the establishment of pharmapsychological medication was a turning point for treatment. The author claims to be one of the first people to study behaviours in those post-drug treatment studies, and seems to take the side of “well, the drugs work, so we can hold back on other forms of therapy”. He is quite old school though. I don’t think that’s the general vibe of current practitioners.
