The headlights were optional on old cars, you had to manually turn them on if it was dark enough but on clear full moon nights there was no need, plus you were saving the planet.

When I was a littl’un, My mum & dad got a new FC Holden. It had no indicators, so you had to stick your arm out the window to indicate you were turning. They eventually had some indicators installed.

Woodie, the FC Holden my parents drove did have indicators.
It was the earlier models where you had to stick your arm out of the window to indicate whether you were turning, or stopping.

My mum was given a Peugot 203 by an honorary aunty when I was a wee tacker. The indicators were those levers that stuck out of the side of the car, no flashing lights. My mum supplemented it by sticking her hand out the window as well, just in case people missed that subtle little lever.
We loved that car. Great long bench seat in the back and a fab lions head bonnet decoration. And of course no seat belts to keep us in place.
