Reinforcing phonics to year 6 today. This year they’re doing something new: having nonsense words to reinforce sounds. So if they’re learning ir, er, ur, they might have kirch and furt and verd.

One kid complained English didn’t make sense, so I taught them “ghoti” and you know what, once I showed where the sounds came from (cough, women, nation etc) the kid actually understood sounds better. At the same time, I think I broke two other kids’ brains 🤷🏻‍♀️
