Apparently I have been pronouncing “broccoli” incorrectly for a while.I say broccolie not broccolee.
I feel weird.
Huh?
I pronounce broccoli as brocco-lie with the hard I. Most people I know do. I rarely hear brocco-lee.
Mind you, the way you write “Lorelie” makes me pronounce it “Laurel-ee” as it would be in German. The German female name and navigationally difficult rock on the Rhine is written “Lorelei” and in German ends in the hard I sound.
I’ve always said brocco-lee. When I learnt German one of the first things we chanted was the vowel sounds…ah,eh,ee,oh,oooh. And then the umlauted ones. Which are considerably more difficult to depict in writing. I use that pronunciation as a guide when pronouncing plant and fungi names because of the Latin base. It doesn’t always work. But it would make broccoli brocco-lee.
