In BUG news for Southeast Queensland, a new facility in Moreton Bay is set to unleash thousands of tiny beetles and bugs to fight two of SEQ’s worst invasive weeds. The new Samford Biological Control Facility is breeding these little environmental warriors—like cat’s claw creeper jewel beetles, tingid bugs, and madeira beetles—to take on the fast-spreading vines that are choking native vegetation and threatening habitats for animals like koalas and platypus.
How does it work? 🤔
👉 Volunteers from Samford Men’s Shed have built special ‘bug dorms’ filled with invasive vines to feed the beetles and bugs.
👉 The facility will raise tens of thousands of these insects every year.
👉 Once they’re ready, the bugs will be released into priority areas like the Pine Rivers, Mid-Brisbane, Mary, and Logan River catchments.
The best part? Once they’re out in the wild, they’ll keep working to control the weeds and help restore balance to our ecosystems. These bugs will not only help protect native plants and wildlife, they’ll also improve water quality and make our landscapes more resilient.
This project is part of the Resilient Rivers SEQ program, funded under the SEQ City Deal, a partnership between the Australian Government, Queensland Government, Council of Mayors (SEQ), and Seqwater.
I hope it works. And not like the dreaded cane toads…
They didn’t test for the calicivirus.
