I guess I am quite similar. My basic philosophy is that of naturalism. On human evolution I think that humans have evolved two natures: one nasty selfish and brutal, and the other empathetic cooperative and social. We have the choice in our conscious mind as to which side we follow. I am not sure it can be bred or engineered out of us.

We see examples of the most horrible cruelty and the most selfless actions of kindness and generosity from humans.
I suppose its in all of us like you say to make that conscious choice, harder for some if nurture has taught them nothing but cruelty.
Can understand how these terrorist groups evolve if they grew up in a war zone, life is cheap, might is right, replace one form of oppression with another that you control.
