Sir John Mennes (Comptroller of the Navy)
Thumbnail1599-71. Much of his early life was spent at sea, where he rose to command various navy ships. He joined the army in 1643 and then the exiled Court in 1650. After the Restoration he became Comptroller of the Navy.
, who is well again, and after staying talking with him awhile, I took leave and went to hear Mrs. Turner’s daughter, at whose house Sir J. Minnes lies, play on the harpsicon; but, Lord! it was enough to make any man sick to hear her; yet I was forced to commend her highly.
