I was having a look around the local airport, Coolangatta Airport, as we’re going to be doing a tour of the desalination plant there next week. i wanted to have a look at the roads before I got there.

But I noticed that on the other side of the highway was a house buried deep in the bush on that side. It looked like quite an expensive house and there was at least one helipad near it (with a helicopter on the pad) and possibly another a few hundred metres away. I spent a little time looking for the access road and found that the house’s driveway literally has a bridge over the M1 highway. Just for that house. The entry to it is another few hundred metres away in an otherwise nondescript road.

A bit more digging and I found that the road/driveway is mentioned on Good Maps and it’s call Merchant’s Easement. I figured that might be the owners name so I searched for that about found it’s Gordon Merchant, the founder of Billabong surf ware.
Here’s the article on the road and him –

Is this a bridge too far?

SURF industry tycoon Gordon Merchant has hit back at claims that taxpayers’ money was squandered on the construction of a private bridge over a Gold Coast motorway.

Mr Merchant can drive up to his remote hilltop mansion on a $1 million private bridge that crosses the Tugun Bypass, thanks to the Queensland Department of Main Roads.

Since the bypass opened to traffic on June 3, about 40,000 motorists a day have passed under the Billabong founder’s driveway, dubbed “Billabong Bridge”.

But a company spokesman has rejected claims the bridge belongs to Mr Merchant, saying the company was “completely frustrated” by claims the Gold Coast’s second richest man has sole use of the bridge.

The spokesman said he understood a number of people used the bridge to get to their properties.

Here’s some screen captures from Google Earth.

That’s my best guess for the driveway and it’s about 1.1 km long.

They’ve got a good range of solar panels to power everything.

And a better image of the house. Chopper & pad just to the north of the house.

Anyway, I found it interesting and we’re going to have a look at the start of the driveway, there seems to be a large gate at that entrance.
