I was curious as to why garlic is considered poisonous to dogs. Because it seemed to come out of nowhere some years ago. It seems it relates to some research in around 2000 in which dogs were fed rather large amounts of garlic over a short period of time. I found this overview (with references) on a Scholar Google search. It looks like a toxic dose for Hei Long would be 4 cloves of garlic every day. Bruna, at 35kg would need to eat 14. (It’s about 8 cloves for a 20kg dog). That’s a lot of garlic.

I think stomach upsets happen at much lower rates. It might not kill them, but not pleasant.

i am wondering why people would feed dogs garlic?
I haven’t observed dogs with a taste for garlic but then I grow garlic and don’t have dogs.

Dogs do like the taste of garlic. At least ours have. Before the 2000 research I used to make liver biscuits for the dogs with a pinch of garlic powder in them. One of the reasons I looked it up was because I’m thinking of doing that again. Although not with the blendered lambs fry…yucky and stinky. I’m thinking I’ll make a basic biscuit mix with not much sugar and mix through broken up dried liver treats. Many prepared dog foods do include garlic.

If you check the ingredients of the meat roll packs for dogs, garlic is a common ingredient, although probably quite small. My dog has a very sensitive stomach that is easily upset, and I find that these foods cause a heartburn like complaint.

I think a lot of people feed their dogs ‘people food’. which contains garlic and onions and sultanas etc.. so while the effects might be almost nil in small amounts, the accumulative effects could have an impact. Sometimes I think this is where these blanket bits of advice come from..

I’m surprised at the people who cook up food for their dogs. We’ve pretty much always fed ours working dog kibble and some raw meat of some kind. We have a friend who says her dog won’t eat raw meat. I find it surprising. But I suppose it is just what he is used to. (They do get puppy kibble and lactose free milk as puppies – for calcium for bones, but they also have raw mince, either chicken or beef. Way back with a couple of the early Boxer pups the breeders advised us to feed Weeties and milk for breakfast. And they have all loved a spoonful of Greek yoghurt on top of their meals)
