This morning had an e-mail from “ATO” saying I had a message on-line, with a link to log on (which should have been a warning).

Went through several pages of log-on stuff (which looked just-like ATO) but ended up with a screen wanting me to upload my ID, and since I had no idea what they wanted me to upload I went back to my e-mail to find I had received over 200 messages about trying to log-in, and confirmation of new accounts and subscriptions, all commercial stuff, and nothing from ATO.

So if you get an e-mail from “ATO” saying click on this link, don’t click on it.

I received an email the other day about ATO scams from the ATO and to use their app or go through MyGov

I got an email from “ATO” a while ago saying they had >$30,000 of my money and what shoud they do with it? Alarm bells started ringing immediately, but I wrote back and said they should have my superannuation fund details, and they should put it in there. They did.

Had you paid sufficient tax to warrant such a refund?

Years back I got a phone call from an Indian/Pakistani sounding chap who said he was from the ATO. He wanted to know all sorts of information and I figured it was a scam so I took the piss out of him for a while.
So anyway about ten minutes later my accountant rings up … yes the call was legit and I was embarrassed.

I’d obviously significantly overpaid my taxes. I prefer to do that as a matter of course, so they’ll never claim I’m attempting tax evasion. Normally it’s much less than that, though.

A few days ago, i got a call (with sub-continental accent) from ‘Eric, from Telstra NBN’.

I expressed surprise that they were still using that creaky old scam, as everyone was wise to it now. I suggested to ‘Eric’ that i had a couple of good scripts for new scams, and that if he presented them to his employers, he’d get hefty kudos and maybe a promotion.

‘Eric’ was somewhat interested, and we’d got to the point where i was about to tell him about buying the gift cards for payment for the scripts, when he seemed to twig that i was trying to scam him, and he hung up.

isn’t the whole point of multi factor authentication that you use different routes to coincide at the destination

so it would make sense to always log in from a freshly entered address
